No Year’s Resolutions

A new year means new resolutions!

I’m joking. This post contains NO new resolutions! Resolutions are hastily constructed, often under the alcoholic haze of fireworks and party hats, and ironically involve feel good quotes about healthy eating, quitting smoking, and getting more exercise. If you remember them come January 15, you’ve done better than most.

For me, the theme for 2016 is continuation. Focusing my energy on, and finishing, tasks I started long ago. Not just finishing but immersing myself in them and improving as I go. Why create new goals when the last handful haven’t been completed?

I realise this doesn’t sound as exciting as brand new shiny goals but life doesn’t stop and start in 12-month cycles. So these are my ‘already-started-long-ago’ projects that I’ll be surging ahead with and this is essentially what my 2016 looks like:

  • My University degree! I started in 2009 and the end is now in sight. I’ve been on a steady path since 2013, so come December ‘16 I’ll have completed my last few modules and I’ll be burning my textbooks (by which I mean storing them neatly in a bookshelf), waiting patiently for my shiny piece of paper.
  • My novel. A work in progress for almost 3 years now. It’s progressed naturally in between everything else but a little extra focus this year won’t hurt. I may even post a chapter or two up here, just because.
  • This blog. I mentioned in my last post that I was reasonably happy with how it went in ’15 but there’s room for improvement, so expect to see more content, and more variety.
  • Sel and I have a trip to Indonesia planned in January/February, and we’re hoping to buy a house before the middle of the year. Maybe we’ll squeeze another holiday overseas in toward the end of year too. There may even be a wedding……. these aren’t projects but they’ll definitely have my full attention and focus.

So what are you hoping to achieve in 2016? Will you be concocting brand new resolutions? Or will you only focus on what you’re already doing, and try to do it better? Or do you think all of this is nonsense and go back to your daily routine tomorrow as if nothing changed?

Happy New Year everyone and here’s to a fantastic year ahead!

p.s WordPress just informed that today is my 1 year blog-o-versary! Yay!

  1. No new resolutions for me either ….. there are enough expectations on us in our lives so why add another!! Happy to embrace what this year may have to offer.

  2. Happy Blogiversary, Mike!! Has it really been a year since we started our Blogging 101 course here on WordPress?! Time flies when you’re having fun, and even when you’re not when you get to be my age. 😉

So you’re finishing up your degree…or did you just finish it last month? I’m a little confused here…congrats! And working on a novel, too? Wow! You are focused!

And maybe even a wedding by the end of the year for you and Sel? Mazel Tov!!

I don’t do resolutions, either. But I’ll be focusing on a few new things too. But rather than tell you about them here, I’ll let you read about them on my own blog in a week or so.

    1. I know right? That year went super-quick, but don’t we say that every year? haha 🙂

Yeah, that point about my degree was a little confusing – I just gave it a quick edit but basically I’ve still got a few modules left to complete so not finished yet 😉

I’m looking forward to your next post!
